We frequently get asked the same questions from our clients and from people curious to know more about residential fire sprinkler systems.
What is an automatic fire sprinkler system? Automatic fire sprinkler systems consist of a water supply system (from pumps and tank or directly from mains water), a network of plastic CPVC pipe and fire sprinkler heads.
What equipment do you use? We use only quality CPVC pipework, fittings and sprinkler heads in our sprinkler systems specifically made and designed for use in fire sprinkler systems. We frequently get asked what CPVC stands for, this is the
Can fire sprinkler heads operate accidentally? (We get asked this one a lot!). Sprinkler heads are individually activated by very high head (around 68⁰C). They do not operate by smoke, dust or fumes. As each head is individually activated only the fire sprinkler head in the location of the fire is activated when required. Contrary to what you see in movies not all sprinkler heads go off at the same time.
Why are sprinklers important for life safety? Fire Suppression Systems do not rely upon human factors such as planned escape routes. They work immediately to reduce the danger. Sprinklers prevent fires developing saving lives and allowing people time to safely evacuate.
Is water damage from sprinklers as bad as fire damage? Water damage from operating fire suppression systems is considerably less than what the fire and rescue hoses would need to discharge. In most cases fire suppression systems operate at an early stage of a fire and will have suppressed or extinguished a fire long before the fire and rescue services arrive.
Are there different types of automatic sprinkler systems? Yes – wet sprinkler systems and dry sprinkler systems. QSD design, supply and installer wet systems we specialise in Fire Sprinkler Systems and Water Mist Systems.
How does the sprinkler head operate? Sprinkler heads have a small glass bulb this bulb will break in the event of high heat which allows water to flow through the sprinkler head and discharge the fire.
Can I paint CPVC pipe? Yes- provided the paint is water or latex based. Oil based paint or paint with solvent content can’t be used with CPVC. Sprinkler heads must not be painted as this will effect how the system works.
